Information Request

Information Request

New postby DC45 » Thu Apr 15, 2010 5:56 pm

I know somebody out there is an expert on this stuff and I need some advice/info.
I have a '06 SR/ET/HT 22' with a Yam 150. Last season I bought and installed a Garmin 4212 (I love it).
This year I am adding depth sounder capability to it. I bought the GSD-22 and the 200/50KHz,TM TRIDUCER 010-10192-01 Depth/Speed/TempTransducer.
I am also adding the fuel flow meter (GFS10). I bought a Garmin NMEA 2000 6m BackBone Cable 010-11076-01 for the GSF10.

I am curious, am I overlooking anything else for the install?
Does the GSD-22 need to be mounted in the cabin?
I have another Garmin all in one GPS/Sounder that came with the boat, when I added the 4212 I relocated the old GPS to an "above head" location.
Will the two Transducers interfere with each other and effect the readings?

Any advice from someone who has put all this in before would be AWESOME

Thanks

Will the two ducers interfere, yes. But leave one on 200khz (4212) and the other on 50khz. That will significantly reduce the artifacts on the screens...(noise)

Should the GSD22 be in the cabin. I would say yes. The high-speed data cable that connects it (GSD22) to the back of the 4212 is only so long. (6') Also, the xducer cable is plenty long enough to reach the GSD22 if it's in the cabin. I usually mount the GSD22 on the cabin wall under the dash facing your knees.

Make darn sure you download an update the 4212 with v5.6 software. Your GSD22 will appreciate the 3rd attempt to get the "auto" settings to work correctly.... :)

Don't forget, the NEW BlueChart G2 VISION charts are out!

I retail them for $279

If your NMEA backbone cable ends up being short I have a brand new 10m (30') that I'd sell cheap. I went through installing all that crap and a radar last year. I would compare it to installing a car stereo and amp. You don't need to be an expert in wiring IMO. The instructions are pretty clear. I left out the interface into the VHF since I would have had to splice into the factory cableing. I think I read somewhere that some outboards can interface and display engine gauges. I really wish I had that as an option with mine, you could see where the temp was exactly instead of relying on the idiot light. The GFS10 is a really nice feature since it keeps you informed of how many GPH you consume. Did you consider radar at all? Good luck

Wow, thanks for the replies, I guess I don't have the MSG board set up to send me an email when a reply is posted.
Mr. Twisted Pair .. this statement ....Will the two ducers interfere, yes. But leave one on 200khz (4212) and the other on 50khz. That will significantly reduce the artifacts on the screens...(noise)....LOL is way above my head in understanding. After I received my parts I have decided to remove the old transducer, and mount the new one in the same due to "location reasons" only. May boat has a nice bracket on the left rear to place it.

Software update, check.... I'm a computer geek in that aspect.

Mr Fish Wish, If I need the cable I will contact you! Radar.........uhhh tough one, I fish/boat mostly Prince William Sound AK, I have the luxury to avoid heavy fog days, and when we do have fog, the channeled terrain cleans it out pretty quick. Other than the fog, I don't see any reason to need radar.

I think I will just keep the 2nd GPS mounted where it is and remove the Transducer, and use it as a back-up.

I would really like to learn more about the NEW BlueChart G2 VISION charts. I am not clear exactly on what it will add for me.

thanks for the replies !!

As far as the Garmin Bluechart g2 Vision cards, isn't the VUS022R, Washington to Northern California better for most northwesterners??

If you do not have a NMEA 2000 network setup already you will need more peices to install the GFS 10.

You will need
- Drop cable (sounds like you already have)
- Power cable kit (yellow NMEA2000 power cable and T)
- Extra T for 4212 backbone cable
- male terminator
- female terminator

Once you have the network setup to add addtional items you simply T into the backbone cable.

You will also need some misc ring terminals to connect a couple wires to the back of your fuel gauge.

I just installed one of these on my boat a couple weeks ago, it works great, i really like it.

Garmin-Yamaha Interface

New postby SkinnyRaven » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:28 pm

Has anyone linked their Garmin unit through the Yamaha "Command Link" to display engine information on the display. I just installed the 740S and see that it is capable. If so, what all is involved, what cables are needed, and where did you locate them?

I just purchased the 4208....the helmside dash was too small for the 4210....

How can I hook my Honda 200 gauges into the 4208?
