I drew the hardest Elk tag in Montana

New postby Shooter » Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:26 pm

After Many many years of putting in for a River brakes tag and having the Max bonus points I Finally got a rifle bull tag
It is like a .2% chance to draw this tag but the Success rate is like 55% There are Lots of very nice elk (300 class) and a large number of near and over 400 class bulls in the brakes. Most of the newer state records have come from there. I have to look but it runs in my mind that 55 to 75 tag are given out. I'm going to take the boat along in the event I get one a long ways in ,it is so much easer to drag it Down to the river than out the top.My daughter-in-law got a Sheep tag in the general area and she got a cow elk tag for just across the river from my area. We may have to haul out two elk and a sheep with the Hewes!!!
There is a saying down there when your hunting, DON'T SHOOT THE FIRST SIX POINT YOU COME ACROSS!!!

This is a picture we got last year when we were Antelope hunting

Image
If its wet I'll run it
If its mud I'll suck it
If its gravel I'll grind it

Congrats! That should be an awesome hunt for you. Good luck on your hunt and be sure to share photos of your filled tag (nothing like some positive thinking). 8-)

Reminds me of my first, and last, hunt in MT in '78. Most of the guys I worked with were sportsman, and being new I had no idea what to apply for, so they all told me to apply for some ranch east of Great Falls, said it was a sure thing, but very limited tags were given. I drew a tag and everyone I worked with was POd. Wasn't as sure a thing as everyone thought either as I only saw one legal buck, got off a hurried shot, and missed, on the only weekend I could hunt.

I, too, will be chasing elk this fall, but in SW WA. I think you'll have a much better chance than I will. ;)
